SOCHS - FALL LAUNCH EVENT

HS IN CANADA and KARONYAKDADEH, Hymns of the Mohawk Elders

Sat 30 September 1:00pm-4:00pm - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Richmond Hill United Church, 10201 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, Ontario

Hymn Society President Hilary Donaldson and SOCHS Chair Christopher

Dawes welcome SOCHS members and all interested to an early-fall gathering

for singing and fellowship, discussion about the history and future of the Hymn

Society in Canada, and a glimpse into a reverse-colonial search for learnings

from the hymns of the Mohawk (Kanienʼkéha) Elders, Akwasasne and Tyendinaga Territories of Southern Ontario and Northern New York.

KARONYAKDADEH is the name of a CD collection of Christian hymns recorded by Jonathan Maracle and his family, in memory of his father, the Rev Andrew C Maracle.  In Christopher Dawes' ongoing research these hymns are being collected, notated, edited, and reverse-translated to English along with a similar collection of hymns still in use on the Tyendinaga territory near Kingston.  Among this beautiful worship music, sung in the Kanienʼkéha language, are familiar European tunes used for entirely new texts created for the use of the Mohawk community on the Akwasasne Territory in northern New York State.

There is no charge for this event, and SOCHS is grateful to Richmond Hill United Church and Director of Music Barry Peters for the kind donation of their space, which stands on the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Mississauga and Chippewa Nations of the Williams Treaty, and the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee and Huron Wendat peoples.
