Amanda Miller Presents: Voices of Resistance
Amanda will lead us through songs that reflect themes of her recent book, Songs of Resistance (Abingdon, 2026), with special reference to historical and recent protest movements. She plans to involve the attendees in small group discussion and communal singing of related hymns and songs, particularly focusing on the impact of Bible stories about influential women such as Hannah and Mary, Deborah and Jael, among others.

About Our Presenters
Amanda Miller
Amanda C. Miller is a scholar, a minister, and a musician. She has a music therapy degree, an MDiv, and a PhD in biblical studies. She currently lives with her family in Toronto, Canada, where she sings with a local choir, reads and writes with an iced mocha in her hand, and kayaks whenever she can get out on the water. Her latest book is Voices of Resistance: The Bible’s Songs of Victory, Peace, and Protest, and she is passionate about faithfully interpreting the Bible for contemporary justice movements and faith communities.
Book description: Miller examines six biblical song genres including victory songs, laments, love songs, apocalyptic music, mothering songs of resistance, and early Christian hymns. Written in accessible language, this project pulls together scholarship and lived experience, to trace the history of songs in faith communities and justice movements, from the biblical text to today. It builds on Miller’s years of experience teaching and building connections between the classroom, the academy, and faith communities.
